How to choose a good bar of soap: by reading the label, not the front of the box

Most bars on the shelf aren’t soap at all. They’re detergent bars the law won’t let a maker call “soap.” Here’s how to tell the difference, which ingredients actually matter, which to be cautious of, and how to match a bar to your own skin.

A good bar starts with what it actually is. True soap is made by saponifying oils and fats: its ingredient list reads like “sodium olivate,” “sodium cocoate,” or “saponified oils of…” A mass-market “beauty bar” or “cleansing bar” is usually a syndet: built on synthetic detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate. The word “soap” on the front doesn’t settle it (the FDA notes some detergent products are marketed as soap), so read the ingredient list, not the box. Neither type is automatically better for you; the right bar is the one whose ingredients suit your skin and whose list you can actually read.

True soap is what you get when an oil or fat reacts with an alkali (lye). A process called saponification. The result is the alkali salt of a fatty acid, plus glycerin. On the label, real soap reads as saponified-oil names: sodium olivate, sodium cocoate, sodium palmate, sodium shea butterate, sodium tallowate, or plainly as “saponified oils of olive, coconut, and shea.” The U.S. Food & Drug Administration draws this line narrowly: to be regulated as “soap,” a product has to be made of those alkali-salt-of-fatty-acid compounds and be labeled and sold only as soap. A syndet or detergent bar is built from synthetic surfactants instead. Read the label for names like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium coco-sulfate, or cocamidopropyl betaine. Under FDA rules, a bar like this doesn’t meet the regulatory definition of “soap” (that’s reserved for bars whose cleansing comes mainly from alkali-fatty-acid salts), but it can still be marketed and labeled as soap; it’s simply regulated as a cosmetic instead. One practical difference: because saponification creates glycerin, a humectant that draws in moisture, cold-process and handmade soap tends to keep it in the bar. Many industrial bars remove the glycerin (it has value sold separately) before pressing the bar. That’s not a verdict on either.   • Sulfate / isethionate / betaine names = a detergent (syndet) bar, whatever the front says.

Why small-batch or handmade, and the honest counterpoint

There are real reasons people seek out handmade bars: cold-process soap usually retains its glycerin, small makers tend to publish an honest, short ingredient list, bars are often fresher, and the maker chooses the superfat and oils deliberately. Buying from a local farmers-market stand or a small-batch maker is also a nice way to support a small business, and you can ask the person who made it exactly what’s in it.

The honest counterpoint: handmade is not automatically safer or gentler. It’s still true soap, which is alkaline, and a poorly balanced handmade bar can be more drying than a well-formulated commercial one. “Natural” and “chemical-free” are unregulated marketing terms. Everything, water included, is a chemical. Judge the actual ingredient list and, above all, how your own skin responds over a week or two. That’s the real test, not the label’s adjectives.

Triclosan and triclocarban are a separate case: in 2016 the FDA barred them from over-the-counter consumer antibacterial washes, having found they weren’t shown to work better than plain soap and water for everyday use.
