What we found
The point isn’t standing all day. It’s being able to change position. Standing eight hours is as hard on your body as sitting eight hours; the research benefit comes from alternating. So the feature that matters is easy, quick height adjustment you’ll actually use, not a desk that promises to fix your health if you just stand more. The marketing oversells the standing; the value is the switching.
Stability is the spec nobody advertises and everybody regrets ignoring. A wobbly desk at standing height (where the frame is most extended) makes you stop raising it, which defeats the entire purpose. Stability comes from the frame and feet, not the desktop, and it’s the single most common complaint on cheap electric desks. Pay for the frame; the surface is the cheap part.

Standing-desk marketing runs on a half-true health claim. Product pages imply that sitting is “the new smoking” and that buying their desk will fix your back, your posture and your energy: right above the Add to Cart button. There’s a real kernel here: prolonged sitting isn’t great, and being able to stand and move helps. But the implied promise (stand more, get healthy) oversells it. So we did the boring thing: we ignored the wellness language and looked at what actually separates a good standing desk from a bad one.
Here’s the part that’s genuinely useful. The benefit of a sit-stand desk comes from changing positions, not from standing all day: standing for hours straight causes its own fatigue and joint strain. That reframes the whole purchase: the most important feature is adjustment you’ll actually use (fast, quiet, with memory presets), and a frame stable enough at standing height that you don’t avoid raising it. Everything else (bamboo tops, RGB, app control, “anti-collision”) is secondary.
After that, the upsells begin. “Programmable health reminders,” premium surface materials, exotic finishes. Nice, but not what makes a desk good. We’re not going to pretend a quality desk isn’t worth it. If you just want to try standing cheaply, a desktop converter that sits on your existing desk (around $130–$300) is the low-risk way in, no new desk, no commitment. If you want the real thing and you’ll switch positions daily, get a dual-motor electric desk with memory presets: the fast, quiet adjustment is what keeps you actually using it, and dual motors keep it steady.
If you have a heavy or multi-monitor setup, dual-motor and a high weight rating stop being optional. A single motor will be slower and wobblier under load. And if you’re unusually tall or short, the spec that matters most is the height range: check that the desk reaches your standing elbow height (and lowers to your seated one) before anything else, because a desk that can’t reach your body is useless no matter how good it is.
And the cheapest improvement isn’t the desk at all: set it up right and actually alternate. Elbows around 90°, monitor top at eye level, and switch sit/stand every 30–60 minutes. The desk only helps if you cycle. The goal was never to stand all day.
